Adventures in Babysitting is a uniquely exciting comedy with a ridiculous premise, but it’s also filled with fun and memorable moments. Elisabeth Shue stars as the likable babysitter who is unavoidably thrust into this crazy adventure in downtown Chicago. Let’s consider the pros and cons…
Pros: Adventures in Babysitting is the directorial debut of Chris Columbus, who went on to direct films such as Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Harry Potter, so there’s definitely a lot of talent behind the camera. Not only is there good direction, but the story has many surprising turns that will constantly keep you guessing . A particularly fun scene is when the babysitter and children finds themselves trapped in a nightclub, with the only way out being to sing the blues, or rather “the babysitting blues”. What ensues next is a wonderful and spontaneous recap of the events leading up to that point, given through an amusing song and dance.
Cons: While this is an original story, the plot is an absolute mess. Everything that happens is either by accident or coincidence, with every situation propelling the adventure further into chaos. The pacing is also slightly jarring near the end, as the movie grinds to a complete halt so the characters (and audience) can catch their breath. Ultimately, these are easy negatives to forgive in a comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously and with so much more to offer.
I give Adventures in Babysitting a B+. Even with a ridiculous plot, this movie holds together well and manages to entertain with surprises around every corner. It’s a movie for the whole family and a most welcome lighthearted comedy. Happy Watching!
