Dungeon Siege (2002)

Dungeon Siege Game

Dungeon Siege is the first game I’m reviewing on this blog and I’m excited to tell you all about it! This RPG follows a young farmer who is tasked with saving the Kingdom of Ehb and uncovering why the once peaceful Krug turned evil. Let’s consider the pros and cons of Dungeon Siege…

Pros: Nearly 20 years after it’s release, I still come back to Dungeon Siege time after time. It’s partially from the nostalgia of sinking hours into this game as a teenager, but it’s also the replay value. The story is easy to get into and sets you off on a linear path right away. However, seasoned explorers will often venture off the beaten path to find secret areas with powerful enemies or rare items. And therein lies the genius of Dungeon Siege. Whether you decide to play as an archer, warrior, or wizard, you can choose your own adventure and the gradual increase in your base skills feels earned, making progression satisfying and worthwhile. This feeling of accomplishment persists throughout the game, as the enemies get stronger and you’re able to recruit more characters to join your party.

Cons: Although I love this game, there are a few flaws that hold it back. Firstly, the controls need an update. Movement is controlled by point and click as opposed to WASD. Secondly, there is an emphasis on inventory management early on when your characters lack bag space. This, along with other game mechanics can make your first playthrough stressful, but if you take it slow and utilize your Transmute spell to turn items into gold, you should be fine. Lastly, the graphics are nothing to write home about. I don’t mind the blockier look because I know it’s an older game, but this may be a bigger drawback for other gamers.

I give Dungeon Siege a B+. The controls are slightly outdated, but this classic RPG still holds up incredibly well today! I hope you enjoyed my first game review on this blog! Check back on the first Friday of every month for more game reviews! Happy Gaming!
